Mgina is married with two children, ages 1 and 5. Her husband works as a fisherman and has multiple wives--her earnings and a portion of his total roughly US$ 95 (TZS 150,000) each year.

Nassir Majid Sadi

Nassir is from Pondeani, a town on the western part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. He hopes to become a dairy farmer. Nassir has previously worked as a poultry farmer but most of his animals died recently due to disease. In the past, he's had experience working with cattle. He is 35 years old and married with four children, ranging in age from 1 1/2 to 7 years old. As a poultry farmer, he earned roughly US$ 65 (100,000 TZS) per year. His wife works as a school teacher and earns a salary of roughly US$ 950 (1,500,000 TZS) annually....

Asha Juma Khamis

Asha is 25 years old and has already shown her entreprenurial abilities--she works making soaps out of cloves and other herbs, which she sells locally. She also grows yams and cassava to support herself. Through her work, Asha earns about $US 125 (200,000 TZS) each year. Asha is not married and lives in Makangale in northern Pemba, off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

Raya Sheha

Raya lives in Makangale on the island of Pemba, off the coast of mainland Tanzania, and is hoping to become a dairy farmer. She is 30 years old married with 5 children ranging in age from 3 to 14 years. She currently farms yams and cassava, earning about US$ 50 (80,000 TZS) each year in addition to the US$ 950 (TZS 1,500,000) salary her husband earns as a teacher.

Mjachwe is a cassava and yam farmer who is hoping to help open a dairy in Makangale, where she lives in northern Pemba off the coast of mainland Tanzania. She is 38 years old and originally from the town of Maziwa Ng'ombe. She is married and she and her husband have 5 children ranging in age from 8 to 18 years old. Her husband also farms and together they earn US$ 60 to 125 (100,000-200,000 TZS) each year.

Ramadhani works as a roof builder in Chanjaani, a town in central Pemba off the coast of mainland Tanzania. He is hoping to become a dairy farmer and will use his construction skills to help build a shed for the cattle. Ramadhani is 40 years old and married with 3 children ranging in age from 8 to 13 years. He currently earns roughly $US 125 (200,000 TZS) each year.

Amina is 30 years old and would like to become a dairy farmer. She lives in Chanjaani, a town on the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. Amina is originally from the town of Wete and is married with three children, ranging in age from 2 to 8 years old. Awilo would like to start his own business raising chickens. He is confident that there is a good market for eggs in central Zanzibar, where he lives, and where eggs sell for about twenty cents (300 TZS) apiece. Awilo is 32 years old and has two wives, with seven children in total. He currently works as a gardener at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre. His first wife is learning to become a butterfly farmer and his second wife earns income selling the bread that she bakes.

Asha is 53 years old and lives in Pondeani, a town on the western part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. She would like to become a dairy farmer. Asha is married and she and her husband have nine children and five great grandchildren. She currently works in the Tanzanian Ministry of Communications and Transportation, earning roughly US$ 780 each year. Her husband works in the regional commissioner's office and earns about US$ 1,900 per year....

Arafa Yussuf Daudi

Arafa currently works as a dressmaker but hopes to become a dairy farmer. She is 27 years old and lives in Pondeani, a town on the western part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. She is originally from the nearby village of Ziwani. Arafa is married and she and her husband have three children between the ages of 1 1/2 and 7 years old. Through her current work, she earns about US$ 30 (TZS 50,000) per year. Her husband earns about US$ 65 (100,000 TZS) per year doing manual labor....

Dema Yanzom

Dema lives in Bhutan's capital city of Thimphu and hopes to open a small shop with her sister selling toys, sweets, and household items. She is 39 years old and was born in the eastern Bhutanese city of Tashigong. She has three children, ages 17, 10, and a two-and-a-half year-old named Sonam (pictured). Her two older children are currently in school.

Sumcho lives in the town of Begana, about 15km north of Bhutan\'s capital city of Thimphu, and hopes to open a small shop with her sister selling toys, sweets, and household items. Sum was born in 1981 in the eastern Bhutanese city of Tashigong. She has one child, a four-year old son.

Hamad is a farmer from Makangale, in the northern part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. He grows sweet yams and cassava, and for 15 years has maintained a small herd of livestock (he currently has four cattle of a local breed) that produce a small amount of milk for use at home. Hamad is 35 years years old and is married with 7 children, ranging in age from 5 months to 13 years old. Mohamed Ali Mohamed

Mohamed is part of the Chaanjani group seeking to start a dairy farm on the island of Pemba. Mohamed is 38 years old and was born in Chanjani. He is married and he and his wife have three children, ranging from 2 to 7 years old. Currently, Mohamed farms yams, bananas, and mangoes, and earns about 250,000-300,000 TZS (US$ 150-190) each year. Mohamed has five years of experience working with cattle before and is looking forward to helping to launch Pemba Fresh Dairy....

Cherif is a tour guide who is originally from St. Louis, Senegal. While his family remains in St. Louis, Cherif currently rents a room in Pikine, a suburb of the Senegalese capital Dakar, so that he can be closer to the center of the tourist industry and business opportunities. Rajab Mwinyi Simai is embarking on a new career as a butterfly farmer. He is 27 years old and lives in Pete, where he grew up. He is married and has a 5 month-old daughter. Currently, he farms cassava while his wife cares for their child. His income depends on the season--during good months he can earn 100,000 TZS (about US$ 60), while during slow months he earns about 40,000 TZS (about US$ 25). Moussa Souley

Moussa is 30 years old and was born in Maradi, in central Niger. He now lives in Niamey, the country’s capital and largest city. Moussa is not married, but has 14 brothers and sisters. He is finishing his degree in communications at Abdou Moumoni University, and currently works as an English teacher at L’eau de Vive school, earning CFA 95,000/month, though the pay is not always steady. He speaks Hausa, French, and English, and is eager to move into private business to test his entrepreneurial skills. Suleiman is 24 Years old and lives in the village of Pete in central Zanzibar, where he was born. He is married and he and his wife have two children, a 4 year-old and a 2 year-old. Right now, Suleiman earns money from two lines of work. First, he grows bananas and cassava, which he is able to sell for a small price at the market. Second, he makes money from cutting down trees for firewood and charcoal. Sadi Mbarouk Mfamau

Sadi is 27 years old and lives the village of Pete with his wife and their three children, who range in age from 9 months to 8 years old. Currently, Said earns money from chopping down trees to sell as firewood and charcoal. He earns about 50,000 to 60,000 TZS ($US 30 to 40) each month. However, it is hard work and he knows that it is destructive to the environment in Zanzibar, especially because deforestation is already a major problem. Mwaka Mustafa Mtambo

Mwaka is 28 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She is married; her husband, Awilo, works part-time as a gardener at Zanzibar Butterfly Centre and has requested funding through 50/50 to buy chickens to help supplement the family's income. Mwaka and Awilo have four kids, ranging in age from 2 to 9 years old. All of their children but the youngest are currently in school. Mohammed is 30 years old and lives in the village of Pete on the island of Zanzibar. He and his wife have two children--a 7 year-old, who is in school, and a 2 year-old. Mohammed and his wife farm cassava and bananas and earn about 90,000 TZS (about US$55) each month. With help from 50/50, Mohammed is looking forward to becoming a butterfly farmer, through which he could earn as much as an additional 400,000 TZS (about US$250) each month....

Mwaachi Ali

Mwaachi is 50 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She and her husband have 7 children (though one passed away) and 4 grandchildren. One of her sons, Rungu, is currently a butterfly farmer and has been able to earn a very good income, so Mwaachi wants to try her hand at butterfly farming too. Currently she and her husband grow cassava and earn 20,000-50,000 TZS (US$ 12-30) each month, depending on whether her husband is able to make some extra money by taking on small jobs. She plans to focus much of her time on butterfly farming and to learn from her son if she has any questions....

Khamis is 23 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. He is married and he and his wife have 4 year-old twins who will be starting school next year. Both Khamis and his wife grow potatoes and cassava. Selling the crops at the market, they are able to earn about 60,000 TZS (US$ 35-40) each month. Khamis is looking forward to butterfly farming and hoping that he is able to earn enough money through it that it becomes his main activity....

Khadija Hussein Saburi

Khadija is 38 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She and her husband have five children. She was one of 50/50's first entrepreneurs and has now been raising butterflies for over a year. Prior to working with butterflies, Khadija was earning 180,000 TZS (about US$120) a year through farming. Her husband was earning roughly the same. With start-up funding of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80) from 50/50, Khadija embarked on a new career as a butterfly farmer. From January to December 2011, Khadija earned 470,425 TZS (about US$ 300), more than doubling her previous income. Khadija paid back the loan portion in full....

Miza Hamadi Musa

Miza is 42 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She is divorced and has 5 children. Prior to her divorce, Miza's family was earning 80,000 TZS (about US$ 50) each month; since then, things have been more difficult. Miza does some farming and sells fruit to men working on a construction project near the village. Miza was one of 50/50's first entrepreneurs and received start-up funding of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80). With start-up funding of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80), she was able to begin butterfly farming at the beginning of 2011.
