Khadija is 38 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She and her husband have five children. She was one of 50/50's first entrepreneurs and has now been raising butterflies for over a year. Prior to working with butterflies, Khadija was earning 180,000 TZS (about US$120) a year through farming. Her husband was earning roughly the same. With start-up funding of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80) from 50/50, Khadija embarked on a new career as a butterfly farmer. From January to December 2011, Khadija earned 470,425 TZS (about US$ 300), more than doubling her previous income. Khadija paid back the loan portion in full.
