About - Mwamvua Yusufu Vuai
Mwamvua is 40 years old and lives in the village of Pete on the island of Zanzibar. She is married and she and her husband have 7 children; the youngest was just born last year. She and her husband farm grow pineapples, cassava, and mangoes. Together, they earn about 90,000 TZS a month from selling their crop.
Mwamvua was one of 50/50's first entrepreneurs. With the help of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80) in start-up funding, Mwamvua got the equipment and skills she needed to begin butterfly farming. From January to December 2011, Mwamvua earned 360,900 TZS (about US$ 225) from raising caterpillars to become butterflies. She is very talented as a butterfly farmer and has enormous potential to earn more--in her best month, she raised 547 pupae and earned over 161,000 TZS (just over US$100).
