Our Approach

What is 50/50?

50/50 is a non-profit microfinance organization that helps people start or grow their own

businesses around the world in places where access to funding and training can be difficult to obtain.

Simply put, we partner with entrepreneurs to make sure their business succeeds.  We accomplish

this by helping them to identify viable business ideas, determining the resources necessary to begin,

and giving them the start-up funding needed to get going.  Then we provide business training, help

them acquire any job-specific skills they'll need, and connect them with the right markets in which

they can sell their products.

How do our entrepreneures get ahold of the start-up money needed to build their business?  From

generous people like you.  Through a unique
peer-to-peer lending model, 50/50 connects people all

around the world who want to help others build better lives for themselves and their families with our

determined, talented entrepreneurs who are working to overcome difficult circumstances.

The start-up funding is provided in a unique way, and quite differently from other microfinance

organizations you may have heard about:  Half of the money is given to the entrepreneur as a grant,

and does not have to be repaid.  The other half is given as a loan, on which there is no interest, and

must be repaid by the entrepreneur on a mutually-agreed upon schedule.  We believe that this

combination engenders responsibility and accountability in the entrepreneur and ensures they are

treated with dignity--after all, part of their own money is at stake.  However, it also recognizes that

when people are beginning from difficult circumstances, sometimes a helping hand--the grant--can

really make all the difference.

That's not all though.  There are several other important ways that we are different from other

organizations.
