Hamad is a farmer from Makangale, in the northern part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. He grows sweet yams and cassava, and for 15 years has maintained a small herd of livestock (he currently has four cattle of a local breed) that produce a small amount of milk for use at home. Hamad is 35 years years old and is married with 7 children, ranging in age from 5 months to 13 years old. Currently, he earns about US$ 190 (300,000 TZS) each year, mostly from selling the calves of his cattle.

As part of the Makangale group, Hamad is looking forward to helping to open the Makangale branch of Pemba Fresh, the island's first dairy farm, where he and the group will care for the cattle and produce fresh milk, eventually expanding to cheese, yogurt, butter, ghee, and other products. Through dairy farming, Hamad has the potential to vastly increase his income and improve his daily life.
