Khalid is a farmer from Makangale, in the northern part of the island of Pemba, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. He grows sweet yams and cassava depending on the season. Khalid is 42 years years old and was born in the town of Konde. He is married and his wife helps him with farming work. Together they have 4 children ranging in age from 10 years old to 18 years old. Currently, Khalid and his wife earn about US$ 110 (or 170,000 TZS) each year.

As part of the Makangale group, Khalid is looking forward to helping to open the Makangale branch of Pemba Fresh, the island's first dairy farm, where he and the group will care for the cattle and produce fresh milk, eventually expanding to cheese, yogurt, butter, ghee, and other products. Through dairy farming, Khalid has the potential to vastly increase his income and improve his daily life.
