Subira is 42 years old and lives in the village of Pete on Zanzibar. She is married and she and her husband have seven children. Both Subira and her husband make their living as farmers and together they earn about 50,000 TZS (US$ 30) each month.
Subira was one of 50/50's first entrepreneurs. With start-up funding of 120,000 TZS (about US$ 80), she was able to begin butterfly farming at the beginning of 2011. Between January and December, she earned 262,400 TZS (about US$ 165) from raising butterflies, increasing her family's earning significantly. With help from her sons Rama and Yussuf, who love caring for the caterpillars, Subira is looking forward to continue in her new career.
